The town of Grand Bay-Westfield is working to develop a new parks and recreation master plan.
Council received a presentation about the process during their monthly meeting this week.
Mayor Grace Losier said it has been a few years since the town’s last plan was created.
“It’s an opportunity to re-evaluate those options that are available to us, what the community is wanting to see. We have a lot of seniors in our community, we want to ensure that, where we can, we’re meeting the needs with respect to recreation at all ages,” said Losier.
Losier said the plan will be developed in a series of phases over the coming weeks and month.
That includes gathering current information, talking to staff and local recreational leaders, and gathering feedback from the public.
Losier said public consultations will be a big part of the process and will likely happen early this summer.
“I don’t want pre-judge the end goal, but certainly if we have things that we should be doing that the community is weighing heavy on then we need to understand whether or not we can afford those, do they exist in other places, and all of those things,” she said.
“For example, there’s all kinds of people who think they want a pool until they find out what it would cost them in their tax dollars. It’s that type of knowledge-sharing between us and them and them making sure that they are heard with respect to the desires for the future of Grand Bay-Westfield.”
Losier said it is expected the plan will be ready for release by August or September.
