Learn-to-sail programs are back up at the Rothesay Yacht Club after a year-long hiatus.
Barbara Creamer, the director at the Rothesay Yacht Club, is in charge of the learn-to-sail program. She said she loves to see the activity around the club.
“It’s given us really a fun sense of excitement to have it up and running again this summer. It’ll be nice to see all of those dinghies on the water again and young kids around the club learning to sail,” she said.
Creamer said young kids are the lifeblood of a program and a demonstration of how healthy your club is.
She said she got involved when her eight-year-old grandson was interested in the program and there wasn’t anyone who was the director, so Creamer stepped in to make sure he would have a chance to learn how to sail.
“The more that we build an early appreciation and a love for the river system that we have on the Kennebecasis and the Saint John River, we are so blessed and to develop any kind of passion and enthusiasm for that, it just feeds my soul,” she said.
The childrens’ programs are a quarter full after just two weeks open to the general public and there are only 14 spots available for adults in their programs although waitlists are available.
Creamer said adults and children of all skill levels are invited.
The programs are happening rain or shine although some classes might happen on land during rough weather, teaching theory.
The sessions will run during the months of July and August.
