Saint John common council approved the rezoning and bylaw amendments required for the Ethos Ridge development to proceed at Tuesday evening’s council meeting.
The 120-unit residential retirement community was the subject of controversy at a public hearing March 29.
Residents and neighbours of the Sandy Point Road area are concerned about the development causing an increase of traffic and noise, as well as negative environmental impacts on the nearby Kennebecasis River.
Council was considering a number of amendments to the municipal plan bylaw, including rezoning the land from Rural to Major Community Facility.
There is a ‘sunset clause’ on the ‘luxury’ retirement community, which allows the city to revoke the rezoning if development is not finished on Ethos Ridge within five years.
