New Brunswick recorded its 31st death related to the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday.
Public Health announced a person in their 30s in the Edmundston region (Zone 4) died “as a result of COVID-19.”
It’s the first time the province linked a COVID-related death directly to the virus. In all previous instances, the province said the deaths were the result of “underlying complications, including COVID-19.”
Meanwhile, the province also added 14 new cases of the virus to its overall tally.
The Moncton region (Zone 1) has two cases — one case is travel-related and the other is being investigated.
A single travel-related case was added in the Fredericton region (Zone 3).
The Edmundston region (Zone 4) added 11 new cases. They involve people ranging in age from 19 and under to over 80.
Seven of the cases in Zone 4 are linked to the outbreak at the Foyer St-Jacques, a special care home in Edmundston.
Twelve more people recovered since Tuesday, bringing the number of active cases to 163.
Eighteen patients are in the hospital and 12 of them are being treated in an intensive care unit.
Public Health noted a potential public exposure to COVID-19 at the YMCA of Greater Saint John on April 1st between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
They also announced that people who are 70 and older may now schedule an appointment to receive their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine online through Vitalité or Horizon Health Network or through a participating pharmacy.
Anyone in this age group, or a family member or caregiver calling on their behalf, can make the appointment.
Editor’s note: The province initially said Wednesday’s death was due to “underlying complications, including COVID-19.” They later revised the information to say the individual died “as a result of COVID-19.”
