The Monarchist League of Canada believes the death of Prince Philip will be marked in a meaningful way.
The Duke of Edinburgh died Friday at Windsor Castle at age 99.
Monarchist League Maritime spokesperson Barry MacKenzie says the Queen and Prince Philip shared an incredible life together after 74 years of marriage.
But like any marriage, he says it was not always perfect especially in the beginning.
“It was very challenging for a 1950s macho kind of guy like the Duke of Edinburgh who had to adjust to being just a fellow in the background with this important role as head of the family but must have felt invisible at times,” he notes.
“The Duke has really been – in her own words – the Queen’s “strength and stay” all of these years and we know because perhaps more than any other family in the world we’re very much tuned in to all the issues they have struggled with. We know that there have been periods of their married life together that have not been easy and challenges both to the institution and family life.”
But after grieving in private, he believes the Queen has a great sense of duty and will soldier on and remain the monarch until her death.
Details of the funeral will be announced shortly but it is expected to be a ceremonial event rather than a large state affair at the request of Prince Philip.
