The federal Conservatives have disclosed their own climate change plan.
The $5-billion plan introduces a $20-per-tonne carbon price for consumers.
The centerpiece is a “personal low carbon savings account’ which some liken to an Air Miles or P.C. points card.
Party leader Erin O’Toole explains your carbon account would accumulate and be used to fund green lifestyles.
“Every time Canadians buy hydrocarbon-based fuel they will pay into their low carbon savings account that they will manage and use towards purchases which will help them lower their carbon footprint,” said O’Toole.
He adds “That could mean applying the savings account towards buying a transit pass or putting the money towards a new efficient furnace or new windows. It could even contribute towards the purchase of a hybrid or electric vehicle for the family.”
The Conservative leader explains this carbon savings account will replace the current Liberal carbon tax.
The plan includes several other measures, including:
-Requiring automakers to sell more zero-emission vehicles;
-Lowering industrial emissions;
-Increasing use of renewable natural gas; and
-Implementing a low carbon fuel standard.
