It has been a long road for some municipal politicians who are not running in upcoming elections, that according to a Mount Allison Political Science Professor.
Geoff Martin says the addition of a fifth year, and now delays in results because of an increase in cases, and zones under lockdown, “The extension to five years, while I think necessary, I think it has put a lot of demands on people. I think there are a lot of tired municipal officials out there, some of who are not running again.”
He says, “I think all over the province, municipal governments definitely need renewal in terms of mayor and Council. New energy, new ideas, for the benefit of all concerned that the people who are in power, so they know that they still have the support of the people. It has been a long time now since the people have been consulted on how things are going.”
Municipal elections will be held in most of the province on May 10th. Areas in lockdown won’t be voting that day.
Results across the province won’t be released until all New Brunswickers have cast a ballot.
