Saint Andrews deputy mayor is hoping to become the town’s new mayor.
Brad Henderson was elected to council in 2016 and six months into the term became the deputy mayor.
He said the town is lucky to have a lot of beautiful homes on half-acre lots but, the challenge is the community doesn’t have a very diverse housing portfolio.
“When you get into things like apartments for long-term rentals. It can be very hard for people that are looking for that type of housing, especially affordable housing,” Henderson said.
Henderson said there is available land in the community and noted some property the municipality has located minutes from the Algonquin resort.
On the all-important tourism sector in the town, Henderson said New Brunswickers travelling to Saint Andrews kept businesses open in 2020.
“They really did. We have a lot of businesses that need to have a solid summer in order to get by and pay the bills over the winter,” Henderson said.
On why Henderson decided to seek the Mayor’s chair now:
“The role of mayor suits my skillset better. The Mayor technically only votes in the case of a tie. The mayor’s primary role is to communicate with the public,” Henderson said.
Henderson said he can communicate to the residents of Saint Andrews so they know what council is doing and they don’t have to sit through a four hour meeting to know what’s going on.
