Already coping with a chronic shortage of nurses, New Brunswick is now losing some RN’s too.
Provincial Nurses Union president Paula Doucet says it’s been really tough for those on the frontlines in the last year.
“We have heard there are some that are choosing to leave the profession altogether and that they can’t cope anymore under the circumstances that we’re in.”
Doucet notes that many nurses in the province will also be retiring soon.
“What we’re being told from the workplace now is that many nurses are counting down the days that they can retire. That’s sad because you’re losing a lot of experience and a lot of people to the system.”
Given the reality of the situation that we now find ourselves in, Doucet adds working long hours and lots of overtime have really taxed out some individuals by the end of their shift.
