Aspiring Saint John police officers are invited to apply to become Chief For A Day.
The city’s police department is offering the Chief For A Day contest as part of National Police Week, beginning May 9.
To enter, residents between the ages of 5 and 12 must submit their drawings of the Greatest Pet Ever by May 7.
Spokesperson Jim Hennessy says last year’s winner can vouch for the prize being well worth the effort.
“I don’t think the smile stopped from the minute she walked through the doors at Peel Plaza until the minute she left,” said Hennessy.
He said the winning entrant gets to spend the day at the Peel Plaza station with members of the force, and will get a chance to check out their equipment including the fleet of vehicles.
Given the Greatest Pet Ever theme, Hennessy says he’s hopeful the department’s furriest members will also be available to spend some time with the newest chief.
“Fingers crossed the K9 dogs are around for the day, they’re always a lot of fun. Axel and Diesel are just the best dogs you can ever imagine.”
With the global pandemic in place, Hennessy says it’s been a tough year for everyone, but especially the younger generation.
“We know they’ve been in and out of the classroom, a lot of questions everyday, things changing,” Hennessy said. “We’re hopeful this is a way for them to get involved, take their mind off some of the day-to-day things they’ve been dealing with, and have a little fun.”
All aspiring police chiefs can submit their entries by email to police@saintjohn.ca, through the city police website, or by mailing their drawing directly to Saint John Police at the following address:
