Horizon Health Network says a clinic has officially opened at The Moncton Hospital specializing in patients with rapid or early-onset cognitive decline.
The main focus will initially be the mysterious brain disease that has afflicted 48 New Brunswickers between ages 18 and 86 since 2018.
The Atypical Neurological Syndrome of unknown origin has claimed six lives.
Patients have either been from the northeast or southeast regions of the province.
Symptoms associated with the disease include rapidly progressing dementia, muscle spasms, lack of balance and coordination, hallucinations, and blindness.
All patients must be referred to the clinic through their health care provider.
Public Health officials have said this is likely a new disease that hasn’t been seen anywhere else in Canada.
