Today marks the first opportunity for New Brunswickers to head to the polls and cast their ballots for the May elections.
From 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. advance polls will be open to help decide who will represent the municipal council, the district education council and the regional health authority board. This will be one of two opportunities residents will have to take advantage of advance polling, with a second date set for Monday, May 3rd.
This year Elections NB is encouraging voters to take advantage of the advance polls as they aim to limit lineups.
“By voting early, New Brunswickers can reduce the risk of lineups on election day, helping us keep voters and our workers safe,” said Municipal Electoral Officer Kim Poffenroth.
Voter information cards were mailed out to residents over the last week to ease the sign-in process at the polls. Anyone that did not receive a card will be asked to confirm their personal information upon arriving at a polling station.
Residents that have recently moved to New Brunswick or recently become eligible to vote must present multiple forms of ID before they can cast their ballot.
Another method of voting is by special ballot, which can be done at all returning offices and satellite returning offices right until voting closes.
New Brunswickers can determine where they can vote through the Elections NB search engine.
Due to the lockdown restrictions that were recently lifted for areas in Zone 4, the Edmundston-Madawaska region will vote later in May.
Voters outside the affected regions must cast their ballots by May 10th, but election results will only be released on May 25th.
