The Brazilian variant of COVID-19 has arrived in New Brunswick.
Public Health says the microbiology lab at Moncton’s Dumont Hospital has confirmed the Brazilian variant in a previously reported case from the Bathurst region.
The Indian variant was found last week in the province and the South African and U.K. variants were detected earlier this year.
One death
Public Health has confirmed someone in their 80s has died as a result of COVID-19 which brings the total number of pandemic deaths in the province to 40.
The individual was a resident of Pavillon Beau-Lieu, a special care home in Grand Falls.
11 new cases
Public Health reported 11 new cases of COVID-19 today (May 6).
This includes 10 travel-related cases of New Brunswick workers who are isolating outside the province and are included in the health zones of their home communities.
The Saint John region (Zone 2) has two new cases – one is under investigation and the other is travel-related:
- an individual 20-29
- an individual 40-49.
The Fredericton region (Zone 3) has one new case:
- an individual 50-59 and this case is travel-related.
The Campbellton region (Zone 5) has one new case:
- an individual 50-59 and this case is travel-related.
The Bathurst region (Zone 6) has seven new cases which are all travel-related:
- an individual 20-29;
- an individual 30-39;
- three people 40-49;
- two people 50-59.
Since yesterday, 13 people have recovered and the number of active cases is 142.
Six patients are in hospital with two in an intensive care unit.
Adolescents now eligible for Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine
Children in New Brunswick who are 12 to 15 years old with a complex medical condition or two or more chronic conditions, are now eligible to book online to receive their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine through the Vitalité or Horizon Health Networks.
A parent or guardian must schedule an appointment and provide consent for children under 16.
Children in the same age category who do not have chronic medical conditions will become eligible for vaccination later this spring at the same time as all those under age 19.
