The Endless Serendipity Boutique, an exclusive consignment store in uptown Saint John, will officially open on May 8.
The boutique, located on 27 Duke Street across the street from Saint John High School, had a soft opening last month.
“I basically always wanted to have my own store – I thought of going green and making sure that so many clothes don’t hit the landfills that are definitely reusable,” says owner Stacey Hamden.
The boutique’s mission is to provide customers with low-cost options of quality brand name clothing and home décor. Consignment options for wedding gowns and prom dresses with suits to be available soon.
Hamden thought it was important to provide them with a bit of financial compensation for their wares instead of people just donating quality gently used clothing. After agreeing on a price, she pays the original owners 60 per cent of the sale.
“In most cases, they are just previously owned, they still have the tags on them,” she said. “People can get a little bit money back for it and not have to have people come to their homes or go to the flea market.”
It was priority for Hamden that she support and give back to the community through her first business. A percentage of profits will be donated every fiscal quarter and it was important for her that the boutique supports local artists, crafters and Maritime wholesalers.
Examples of local goods sold at Endless Serendipity include Saint John’s Twigs & Reels Clothing Co., East Coast Lifestyle Apparel, Custom Chrome Designs jewelry by Juanita Rowe and Gerry Shephard and artwork by artists Emily Katherine, Sue Ellis and Karine.
Hamden says about half of her clientele are high school students, who come in regularly looking for certain brands and to scope out new pieces.
“They’re starting to think more ‘green’ and they don’t mind buying and thrifting, if things are in good shape, and they also like to buy East Coast Lifestyle products as well,” she said. “My youngest is almost 16, him and his friends are very conscientious about that.”
