The Nature Conservancy of Canada is giving everyone permission to put off mowing the lawn this month.
The organization is pushing for No Mow May to help the bugs, birds and wildlife that thrive in green spaces.
National Media Relations Director Andrew Holland said putting this task off makes you a friend to nature.
“It’s good for pollinators, it’s good for bees and moths that need these habitats,” Holland said.
Holland understands this is not for everyone, noting some people will want to mow.
“You may have neighbours that have immaculate lawns and you may see the need to keep up with the Jones’. They may be giving you the stinky eye and wondering why you are being so lazy. Well, you can tell them you are helping the environment and nature,” Holland said.
He suggests the folks that want to mow consider leaving a patch of shaggy grass in one corner of their lawn.
Paula Noel, the New Brunswick program director for the Nature Conservancy of Canada says by letting flowers bloom on our lawns, we provide an important source of nectar and pollen for wild bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.
