Pedestrians in uptown Saint John are asked to avoid the top of King Street as the demolition of the old Woolworth building nears.
Developer Percy Wilbur says construction on the new building at 91 King Street will begin later this summer. In the meantime, the city has announced areas to avoid during the demolition period.
Starting Monday, May 17, parking will not be available on South Market Street, and there will be no through traffic on the street either. The bottom of South Market Street will be available to pedestrians.
North Market Street will also not allow parking other than a loading zone for vehicles delivering to market vendors.
The portion of sidewalk next to the site will also be closed while demolition occurs. That includes along Charlotte Street between South Market Street and King Street, along with the north side sidewalk at the top of King Street.
Pedestrians will still have sidewalk access on the south side of King Street, as well as the King’s Square sidewalk.
Parking along King Street adjacent to the demolition site will be restricted to construction vehicles.
All of the changes will be in effect until the demolition process is complete.
