New Brunswick health officials reported 14 new cases of COVID-19 and eight more recoveries on Sunday.
Eight of the new cases are in the Fredericton region (Zone 3). Five are contacts are previously confirmed cases, one is travel-related, and two are under investigation.
There are three travel-related cases in the Bathurst region (Zone 6) and one travel-related case in the Miramichi region (Zone 7).
The Moncton region (Zone 1) also reported two new cases and both are contacts of previously confirmed cases.
There are now 128 known active cases across the province with more than half of them in the Fredericton zone, which has 69 active cases.
The Bathurst region has 19 active cases, the Saint John region (Zone 2) has 18 cases, the Moncton region has 12, there are six active cases in the Miramichi zone, four cases in the Edmundston region (Zone 4) and none in the Campbellton region (Zone 5).
Seven people are hospitalized in New Brunswick, including three in an intensive care unit. One person is hospitalized in an intensive care unit outside of the province.
Case Confirmed At Fredericton School
The Anglophone West School District announced a positive COVID-19 case at Connaught Street School in Fredericton on Sunday evening.
In a letter to parents, superintendent David McTimoney said Public Health is currently conducting contact tracing.
“Starting this evening, your child and all household members are required to self-monitor for 14 days. Please note that this is not a period of self-isolation unless Public Health advises you directly,” McTimoney wrote.
Tuesday will be an operational day, which means there will be no instruction for students, he said.
McTimoney said learning will need to occur from home over the course of several days this week.
“Teachers will connect with families to share the plan for distance learning. This will be done electronically or by telephone,” he said.
Exposure Notifications
Public Health announced several potential public exposures to COVID-19 in Fredericton on Sunday.

- Christ Church (Parish) Church, 245 Westmorland St. on Sunday, May 16, 10:30 a.m. service
- Hope City Church, 429 Clements Dr. on Sunday, May 16, 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. services
- Walmart Supercentre, 1399 Regent St. on Sunday, May 16, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
- Shoppers Drug Mart, 1040 Prospect St. on Sunday, May 16, between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
- Sobeys Fast Fuel, 530 Brookside Dr. on Monday, May 17, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
- Walmart, 125 Two Nations Crossing on Monday, May 17, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
- Dollarama, 125 Two Nations Crossing on Monday, May 17, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
- Petro-Canada, 20 Royal Rd. on Tuesday, May 18, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Fadi’s Pizza, 312 Main St. on Tuesday, May 18, between noon and 2 p.m.
- Fredericton Regional Centre, 300 Saint Mary’s St. on Tuesday, May 18, and Wednesday, May 19, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Atlantic Superstore, 116 Main St. on Wednesday, May 19, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
There was also potential exposure to a positive case at the Fredericton YMCA daycare at 570 York St. on May 17 and May 18.
Public Health is advising the families of children and staff at the facility to restrict their movements for the next 48 hours as contact tracing is carried out. Those who have been in close contact with the case will be notified by Public Health.
Officials also identified a positive case in a traveller who may have been infectious on the following flights:
- Air Canada Flight 7948 from Regina to Toronto, departed at 1:05 p.m. on May 20
- Air Canada Flight 8946 from Toronto to Moncton, departed at 8:47 p.m. on May 20
Anyone who was potentially exposed should self-monitor and get tested. Those who have developed symptoms should get tested and isolate with their household.
Vaccination Update
More than 383,000 New Brunswickers aged 12 and older have now received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
That accounts for more than 55 per cent of the estimated 693,000 people who are eligible to receive the vaccine.
To date, more than 419,000 doses of vaccine have been administered in New Brunswick.
According to New Brunswick’s COVID-19 dashboard, the province has received more than 470,000 doses to date. That number is expected to reach 554,000 doses by May 28.
