With Disability Awareness Week set to begin on May 30, the NB Coalition of Persons with Disabilities has invited Premier Blaine Higgs to have a discussion.
The Coalition sent the Premier a letter to outline the challenges that persons with disabilities face, and ask that a a guranteed income program be implemented.
New Brunswick’s working age population with a disability(23%) is 5% percent above the national average while also receiving the lowest amount of government assistance among the provinces.
Coalition Chairperson Shelley Petit wrote in the letter, “People with disabilities in this province have been living below the line of poverty for far too long and it’s time to act.”
The Coalition fears that with minimal assistance and a rising cost of living, it’s difficult for some to survive.
The week will mark New Brunswick’s 34th annual Disability Awareness Week.
