A former provincial MLA and cabinet minister from the Sussex area has died.
Hazen Elmer “Hank” Myers passed away at his home last Monday at the age of 86.
Born in Norton, Myers had a 20-year career at Stelco in Hamilton, Ont., before returning to New Brunswick where he and his wife, Joyce, bought a family grocery business in Sussex.
Myers’ political career, which spanned nearly two decades, began on Sussex town council in 1977.
He was then elected as the Progressive Conservative MLA for Kings East in 1978 and became Minister of Agriculture in 1985.
Myers lost his seat during the Frank McKenna Liberal sweep in 1987 but returned to office for four more years in 1991.
He also served as an aide to a member of Parliament, a member of the Parole Board of Canada, and chair of the Farm Products Commission.
Premier Blaine Higgs issued a statement of condolence over the weekend about the passing of Myers.
“To the family and many friends of Hank Myers, on behalf of the people and Government of New Brunswick, Marcia and I offer our sincerest condolences,” Higgs wrote.
A funeral service for Myers will be held at a later date.
