Saint John East MLA Glen Savoie has been diagnosed with cancer.
The Progressive Conservative MLA announced his diagnosis Tuesday in a Facebook post.
Savoie said after experiencing pain and discomfort for some time, he was sent for an MRI, which detected the cancer.
“The original news came to me a couple of weeks ago, and I have been working with my medical care team to determine what cancer it is, and from that, to figure out a treatment plan,” Savoie wrote in the post.
“I cannot express my thanks enough for the expert care and attention I have received at every step in this process from our healthcare system. They caught it quickly, and have acted with all urgency, for which I am thankful.”
Savoie said the cancer appears to be multiple myeloma, adding a biopsy has been scheduled for this week to help identify the exact form of cancer.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, multiple myeloma is a cancer that starts in plasma cells — a type of white blood cell found mainly in the bone marrow that makes antibodies to help the body fight infection.
“It is not a habit of mine to make such a private issue public, but as I am a public figure, it is natural for the people who I serve to have questions,” said Savoie.
Savoie said he plans to continue to work as much as possible but that processes will be put into place for his constituents should his treatment require him to take some time away.
The MLA said he remains in good spirits, adding that his faith, along with the strength and support from his family have sustained him.
“I have every confidence in our healthcare system, and that the therapies they offer will get me back to good health.”
