New Brunswickers are encouraged to reach out to a senior in their life Tuesday during Intergenerational Day Canada.
The day is a chance for seniors and youth to come together to break down isolation and reduce loneliness.
“This is particularly appropriate now because we know that the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many people into isolation and it can be a difficult and lonely time,” Social Development Minister Bruce Fitch said in a statement.
If you cannot visit in-person because of COVID-19, Fitch said there are other ways to connect with a senior, such as by phone or even through a Zoom or Skype call.
Other ideas include drive-by parades, window visits, and sending cards with prescription and food deliveries.
Fitch encouraged everyone to continue following Public Health guidelines while taking part, such as wearing a mask, washing your hands, and practicing physical distancing.
Intergenerational Day Canada was started in 2009 by a teacher in British Columbia who was working with students on a world elder abuse prevention and awareness project.
The idea of bringing younger and older people together grew from there. Now, more than 100 cities and 12 provinces and territories observe the day.
