Rogers Communications announced Thursday it’s expanding the only 5G network in Atlantic Canada to the Saint John region.
In a news release, the telecommunications company says the service is also available in Moncton and Fredericton, adding it now offers access to 5G to more than 700 communities across the country. It expects to reach 1,000 by the end of 2021.
“The expansion of the 5th generation wireless network is an exciting opportunity,” said Donna Reardon, Mayor of Saint John, in a release. “Providing a new wireless standard that’s faster, more responsive and has greater capacity enhancing Saint John’s connectivity to the world.”
According to Rogers’ Atlantic Region President Matt MacLellan, 5G service is a technological game-changer that expects to bring faster speeds and network performance to Saint John residents and businesses. It’s currently the fastest and largest 5G network in Canada.
The wireless provider partnered with Ignite Fredericton last year to give the service to the Innovation Lab in Knowledge Park. It also is one of several sponsors for the BOOST innovation camp, which aims to address Fredericton’s smart city challenges.
Rogers says investments within the telecommunications industry are expected to contribute around $40 billion to Canada’s economy every year. That number means it could create about 250,000 new full-time jobs by 2026.
