Saint John Common Council has begun the process of selecting the next deputy mayor.
Ward 1 Councillor Greg Norton, John MacKenzie in Ward 2, and Ward 3 representative David Hickey have put their names forward for the role.
Previously, the councillor receiving the most votes in the election automatically earned the title of second-in-command at council, and was responsible to run the meetings in the event of the mayor’s absence.
However, that process was changed due to the fact that the old method tended to favour councillors-at-large, who receive votes from all four wards, as opposed to the other eight councillors who were only on the ballots in one ward each.
The new method requires interested parties to put their names forward, and council members will vote to determine who earns the role at their next meeting.
