New Brunswick’s health minister believes there is alignment between the government and the Child, Youth and Seniors advocate on improving care for those experiencing a mental health crisis.
In his interim report with ten recommendations, Norm Bossé called for ongoing training for all emergency room staff in dealing with suicidal youth.
Shephard said the government began work right away when the public needed to see improvement in services.
“We’re encouraged by the fact that I think in this interim report we are running parallel with recommendations,” Shephard said.
Shephard said trauma-informed care is extremely important for all first responders whether they are in the ER, on an ambulance, police or firefighters.
Another recommendation is planning for the impacts of the pandemic on students who have been isolated and away from their peers.
Shephard said there is a good understanding that government needs to make initiatives happen quickly.
“We know that our children need to be bolstered and we are to be diligent of that and work on supporting them through this process,” Shephard said.
