The United Way of Saint John, Kings and Charlotte switched the focus for a well-loved event because of the pandemic.
Songs of the City has become Stories of the City for this year only.
Executive Director Alexya Heelis said the video series sharing personal stories allows donors and community members to feel their donation’s impact.
“This Stories of the City sort of virtual event that we’re doing over June, really does give us that opportunity to share four of those stories from right across the region,” Heelis said.
One of the videos focuses on Michael who turned around his struggles with reading.
“To see the impact that his love of reading from a kid that hated to read and now a kid that never doesn’t have a book in his hand. He’s also passing that on to his younger siblings and helping them learn to read and helping them learn that love of reading,” Heelis said.
Heelis said Songs of the City will return next year noting the Imperial Theatre is already booked.
Videos produced for Stories of the City will be used at the United Way campaign kickoff in September and in their workplace campaigns.

MICHAEL: As an elementary school student, Michael struggled with reading. Through UW funding, Michael was able to participate in after-school tutoring and Summer Slide programs. Michael’s confidence has grown! @PortSaintJohn pic.twitter.com/9sqRAEnE6k— SJ United Way (@SJUnitedWay) June 14, 2021
