An uptown Saint John church is working to raise $150,000 for a major restoration of the century-old building.
The immediate concern at Calvary Temple Church on Sydney Street is the roofing shingles over the main sanctuary.
Rev. Chad Nickerson, the church’s lead pastor, said the 30-year shingles have disintegrated in less than 15 years and were not covered under warranty.
“We’re having some leaking now in the building and we’re having to rectify that very soon, most urgently, then we’ve had damage from that that has just happened in the last nine months and we’re trying to do those repairs,” Nickerson said in an interview.
Nickerson said there are other areas of the building that will need new roofing in the near future and further repairs are needed to the 102-year-old facility.
More than $87,000 has been raised so far through a concert, fundraising dinners, pleas to alumni of the church, and a letter campaign.
Nickerson said they have also received support from 12 churches across the Maritimes and in Ontario.
“We’ve had individuals reply from across Canada, a number of churches,” he said. “It’s just been overwhelming the great support.”
“It kind of reminds you there’s a lot of folks out there that like to work together.”
Work to resurface the sanctuary roof will begin in July and Nickerson said they also hope to complete the remaining work this year, provided they raise enough money.
