Thirteen uptown parking spots could remain blocked for the duration of construction at 91 King Street in Saint John.
The parking spaces at the top of King Street have been blocked off since before the demolition of the old Woolworth building began last month.
Common Council approved the first two readings of the bylaw at its meeting Monday night.
The bylaw does include a deal to turn the currently closed lane on Charlotte Street between North Market Street and Union Street, which normally operates as a through lane, into seven metered parking spots including one barrier-free parking spot.
Developer Percy Wilbur would reimburse the city for the lost revenue due to the 13 closed spots, which would total $13,500 through the end of 2023. That total includes $3,500 for 2021 and $5,000 each for the subsequent two years.
If work on the development is not completed before 2024, city staff will negotiate a rate to keep the spaces closed until construction concludes.
The right-most lane of Charlotte Street between South Market and King Street, which normally functions as a right-hand turn lane onto King will also remain closed throughout the construction.
