Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, and Elsa are the five named storms so far in the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season which officially began June 1.
Most tropical systems don’t typically impact Atlantic Canada until late summer or early fall.
Weather Network meteorologist Michael Carter says this season is expected to be more active than normal.
“Although not as active as last year’s record-breaking season. We were deep into the Greek alphabet by the time the season wrapped up in terms of named storms in the North Atlantic.”
Carter says waters around the region are warmer than usual and that could mean stronger storms.
“Especially as we do see those warm waters persisting… if those linger into August, September, October, we could certainly see those late-season storms.”
The Atlantic hurricane season runs until November 30.
