The popularity of Bloom Boutique’s hair accessories and trinkets is an unexpected, yet exciting, surprise for local entrepreneur and photographer, Kendra Thomas.
Thomas started her boutique with those skills in mind, already making headbands for babies, which led to making other hair accessories and even masks.
Her photography business, Life’s Little Moments Photography in 2009, saying she always had a camera in her hand as a kid. Her grandfather was a photographer, and she would tag along and learn when he would do wedding shoots.
Bloom Boutique grew out of Thomas’ desire for something to do and bring in income during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. She and her best friend talked about how much they loved scrunchies, but couldn’t find any they liked, which inspired her to make and sell them alongside her headbands.
Thomas began selling her hair accessories online last June and soon after business blossomed.
Thomas works out of her home, saying business has been brisk and with the number of orders varying by season, some weeks would see up to 100 orders shipped. Things with the holidays were so busy that Thomas’ seven-year-old son helped her fill scrunchie orders when she was backed up at Christmas.
“He actually helped me for three hours and that became something from there that he actually enjoys doing,” she said.
This year Thomas has added bookmarks and keychains to Bloom Boutique’s product line and plans to add more products and requests as the business grows. One request she received recently was a custom tutu.
“It surprised me because I wasn’t really expecting it to be as busy as it is and it’s just continued to blossom,” she said, adding she has customers from all over Canada, from Newfoundland to British Columbia, and even some from Britain.
“I do more with Bloom than I do now with photography, so it’s been interesting, and it was very different than anything that I had done previously.”
