Saint John’s new police chief attended his first meeting of the Board of Police Commissioners on Tuesday night.
Robert Bruce, who began his new role on July 1, said he’s very impressed with the “passion and enthusiasm” he’s seeing for public safety.
Bruce noted the difficulties facing the force in the last year with management changes, the pandemic and the cyberattack.
“I would like to publicly thank the members of the police force for the excellent job they have done with those three pressures as we move forward. Now we’re moving on, we’ve got some consistency in the leadership role here now. Got a great command team,” Bruce said.
Bruce said his approach is to meet with as many people as possible to get a feel for what’s happening in the police force and in the city.
“So far, I have seen nothing but energy and excitement about moving the yardsticks and making our police force, a better police force. Making one the public has not only confidence and trust in but, also pride,” Bruce said.
Police Commission Board Chair Ed Keyes said unless things change drastically, the September meeting will be held in person in the community room at Peel Plaza. The commission will not meet in August.
Common Councillor Joanna Killen also attended her first meeting since becoming a new member of the commission.
