Saint John fire crews rescued an injured hiker off William’s Trail in the Cape Spencer area over the weekend.
Platoon Chief Josh Hennessy said crews were called to the scene around 12:15 p.m. Sunday.
“As information became available, leveraging cell phone location technology, it was determined that the non-ambulatory 50-year-old female hiker was located approximately three kilometres down the rugged Fundy coast terrain,” said Hennessy.
Hennessy said crews initially made contact with the woman within 30 minutes and determined they would need to use rope systems in order to get them to safety.
The rope rescue team deployed around 1,300 feet of rope systems for guidelines, lift assist, and fall protection over the rugged coastline, he said.
“An additional crew was called into this scene to relieve exhausted fire department personnel that were dealing with the challenging terrain as the patient was essentially lifted the entire way out,” said Hennessy.
The patient was transported back to the Cape Spencer Lighthouse and transferred to paramedics from Ambulance New Brunswick around 3:30 p.m., he said.
A total of 17 firefighters responded to the incident, along with two paramedics and one RCMP officer.
“It was certainly a collaborative effort to get them out,” said Hennessy, adding that no first responders were hurt during the rescue.
There is no word on the extent of the woman’s injuries.
