The government is prepared to change restrictions at the border to ensure the safety of Canadians.
Fully vaccinated Americans are able to cross over the land border into Canada as of August 9, but with measures in place including travelers being asymptomatic and provide a valid pre-arrival COVID-19 molecular test result taken in the United States.
“We know that people who are fully vaccinated can contract COVID-19,” says Minister of Health Patty Hajdu. “That’s why people who are traveling internationally, must whether they are Canadian or American, submit to a 72 hour pre-departure test before returning to Canada.”
The decision to reopen the border to American travelers was met with mixed emotions, some ecstatic to once again be able to see loved ones, while others feared this could see COVID-19 cases brought up to Canada.
The Minister stressed the statistics in terms of cases resulting from fully vaccinated Canadians returning to the country are promising, but adds authorities will be monitoring the data very closely in the weeks to come.
