Tuesday is election day in Nova Scotia, and what seemed like a runaway Liberal victory has grown a whole lot less clear in the last week.
Liberal leader Iain Rankin is still predicting a majority while Tory leader Tim Houston said it is going to be close.
An Aug. 10 poll had about one-third of voters undecided, leaving a lot of room for the contest to swing.
If the Liberals end up in a minority situation, Gary Burrill’s NDP will likely hold the balance of power and will probably see some platform concessions, a big win for the third party.
The polls for the provincial election are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and results are expected to start rolling in right after.
But it is unclear how long that might take with record numbers of write-in ballots and early voting.
Richard Temporale, the province’s chief electoral officer, has said he may need to stop the count at midnight, even without a clear winner.
If that happens, the count will resume at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
