New Brunswick Public Health reported 34 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday.
The cases are spread over five health zones, including a notable increase in Zone 2 and Zone 3.
The 11 new cases in Zone 1 (Moncton region) are as follows:
- three people 19 and under;
- five people 20-29;
- one person 30-39;
- one person 40-49; and
- one person 50-59.
Four cases are under investigation and seven cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases.
The nine cases in Zone 2 (Saint John region) are as follows:
- four people 19 and under;
- two people 20-29;
- two people 30-39; and
- one person 40-49.
One case is under investigation, one case is travel-related and the seven other cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases.
The 11 cases in Zone 3 (Fredericton region) are as follows:
- five people 19 and under;
- two people 20-29;
- one person 30-39;
- two people 50-59; and
- one person 60-69.
Four of the cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases, six cases are travel-related and one case is under investigation.
There is one case in Zone 4 (Edmundston area) of an individual 20-29 and that case is under investigation.
The two cases in Zone 7 (Miramichi region) are as follows:
- one person 19 and under; and
- one person 80-89.
Both cases are contacts of a previously confirmed case.
Public Health says of the new cases, 88 percent, or 30 of 34, are not fully vaccinated.
“As we expected, COVID-19 is not going away; there are now active cases reported in all health zones, mostly among those who are not fully vaccinated,” said Dr. Cristin Muecke, deputy chief medical officer.
“Getting vaccinated is the surest and most effective way to protect yourselves, your family, those who cannot be vaccinated, and your community from the COVID-19 virus.”
Since Thursday, 12 people have recovered from COVID-19, raising the active case count to 152. There is one New Brunswicker hospitalized with the virus
The number of confirmed cases has been revised due to false positives discovered in the Moncton and Saint John regions. Both individuals are being notified about the test results.
As of today, August 20, 72.3% of New Brunswickers are considered fully vaccinated, and 83.8% have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. To date, the province has administered 1,082,569 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
