United Colours of Fashion, (UCOF) is putting on its first runway fashion show this Saturday at the Imperial Theatre.
The non-profit organization seeks to empower immigrants and newcomers to overcome barriers through fashion.
UCOF Co-Founders Christine Eruokwu and Rufina Ajalie says their goal is to provide a platform, training and support for black, Indigenous and people of colour immigrants and minorities to pursue a business or career in fashion.
“We create a platform and showcase their designs so that we can share their talents and creations with the community and the world at large,” said Eruokwu.
The show was initially to be held in August 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to it being postponed.
Nine designers and retailers will showcase their work; half of the designers are alumni of New Brunswick College of Craft and Design and the other half are new immigrants to New Brunswick.
Ajalie says the reception of the show will determine the trajectory of future UCOF fashion show. Proceeds from show will go toward further training opportunities and to help support immigrants and minorities’ fashion businesses.
She hopes UCOF will be able to hold a yearly fashion show and possibly expand into a fashion week, showcasing in different cities and communities across New Brunswick.
The show’s venue, The Imperial Theatre is also a sponsor alongside Opportunities New Brunswick, PRUDE and RBC.
“The Imperial Theatre has a very strong mask policy which enhances the sense of security for our patrons as we go to the event on that day, unlike last year where there were no vaccinations,” said Eruokwu. “They ensure that everyone who comes in there feels safe while having fun at events.”
People have the option of purchasing a ticket to see the event in-person or livestream the show.
Those who are interested in the event can check UCOF’s Facebook page and website.
