Public Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at the Southeast Regional Correctional Centre in Shediac after discovering four positive cases.
The first case was confirmed on Friday, according to Coreen Enos, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice and Public Safety.
As a result, the Public Health PROMT Team tested all inmates and close contact staff. Enos says the four confirmed cases include inmates and staff.
Multiple staff members are in self-isolation, while inmate movement is restricted to “mitigate spread.”
Enos says The Department of Justice and Public Safety has a contingency plan that includes assigning staff from other facilities to the centre in Shediac.
Due to the outbreak, all court appearances will be held remotely through video conference.
