Several inmates who have tested positive for COVID-19 are being housed in a designated unit at the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety said the inmates are part of an outbreak at the Southeast Regional Correctional Centre in Shediac.
A spokesperson for the department said they were transferred to the Saint John jail as part of the Correction Services COVID management plan.
“There are no other COVID-19 cases at the Saint John Correctional Centre,” Coreen Enos said in an email. “The use of designated units means no impact on other inmates at the Saint John Correctional Centre.”
Earlier this week, department officials confirmed there were four cases at the Shediac jail involving staff and inmates.
Enos said the inmates transferred to Saint John from Shediac will attend court by way of videoconference.
She said correctional centres continue to follow COVID protocols, with staff wearing personal protective equipment.
“Every person is tested for COVID-19 before joining the general population at provincial correctional centres,” said Enos.
