It is go time for the Saint John Alpines as they gear up for the senior baseball league playoffs.
Saint John will open the best-of-seven series against the Charlottetown Islanders this weekend.
“Our arms are well rested and we’re ready to go. The guys are really keen,” Terre Hunter, general manager of the Alpines, said in a phone interview.
The Alpines finished the regular season in second place (13-10) while the Islanders were in last (4-12).
But Hunter said he expects there will be several close games throughout the series.
“Three of the games that we played against Charlottetown were decided by one run and I think there were another couple of games that were decided by two or three runs,” Hunter said in a phone interview.
Hunter believes it will be a “great pitching battle” between the two teams in a series that is expected to see a lot of back and forth.
“The strength of their team is pitching and I would say certainly one of the strengths of our team is pitching as well,” he said.
Game one goes Saturday at 2 p.m. at Memorial Field, while Charlottetown will host game two on Sunday. Action returns to Saint John for game three, which is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The other series has the Moncton Fisher Cats facing the Chatham Ironmen, who decided to play in the intermediate circuit this year due to low player turnout.
