The University of New Brunswick says it will implement regular, mandatory COVID-19 testing this fall for all students, staff and faculty who aren’t fully vaccinated.
Starting Sept. 8, testing will be required on Fredericton and Saint John campuses as well as its Moncton site, according to a Friday news release.
“We are committed to providing access to post-secondary education in a flexible and adaptable manner, while holding the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff as our top priority,” read the release.
The university says the tests will be required every three days in order for the campus community to attend in-person classes and on-campus activities.
Anyone who can show proof that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will be exempt from the testing mandate. UNB community members can upload vaccination proof through the UNBSafe app.
UNB says the tests will be provided for free, adding that more details surrounding the testing process, accessing testing centres and how others are affected will be released soon.
In addition, those who can’t participate in mandatory regular testing can apply for accommodation requests, but they will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
The university says those applying for medical exemptions must provide a note from their primary health care provider. Still, UNB says that vaccines are the most effective way to limit the spread against COVID-19.
“Fully vaccinated individuals carry a lower risk of contracting the virus and spreading it to others,” read the release.
“We encourage all members of our community to take this step and help ensure a safe and healthy fall for our campuses, our communities and our province.”
