The Rotary Club of Hampton is looking for donations in support of providing emergency disaster relief in Haiti.
According to the club’s Facebook page, it is working with Shelterbox Canada, the disaster relief partner for Rotary, to provide emergency shelters to families that lost their homes in an earthquake earlier this month.
On Aug. 14, the Caribbean country was shaken by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. A little more than 2,200 people died in the natural disaster, injuring more than 12,000. In addition, almost 137,000 homes were damaged or destroyed.
It’s believed to be the deadliest earthquake and natural disaster this year. It’s also the worst disaster to hit Haiti since the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked the country in 2010, which affected an estimated three million people at the time.
The Rotary club asks those interested in helping out to visit ShelterboxCanada.org to donate directly. You can also e-transfer a donation to HamptonRotaryNB@gmail.com. The club says it will provide charitable tax receipts, adding they will match donations up to $600.
