A Narrative Research poll put the Liberals in the lead in New Brunswick early in the federal election campaign but the Conservatives and NDP are gaining momentum.
Pollster CEO Margaret Brigley said while the Liberals were well positioned before the election call, a shift in voting intentions is evident at the expense of the Liberals and the Greens.
Support among decided voters in New Brunswick as of August 20:
- Liberals 44 percent
- Conservatives 24 percent
- NDP 18 percent
- Green Party 10 percent
- People’s Party of Canada 4 percent
Almost a quarter of voters were undecided.
Across the province, the Liberals were ahead in the north while the Conservatives were ahead in the south.
The Liberals and NDP were in a tight race in the Moncton area.
Age played a factor with younger residents under 35 more likely to vote NDP while middle-aged and older residents expressed clear support for the Liberals.
Satisfaction with the overall performance of the federal government has declined from a spring survey.
Just under one-half of residents (48 percent) expressed some level of satisfaction with the federal government’s overall performance, compared to 59 percent in May.
When asked which leader they would prefer as Prime Minister, one-third of New Brunswickers expressed a preference for Justin Trudeau (33 percent as opposed to 38 percent in May followed by Jagmeet Singh with 19 percent and Erin O’Toole with 15 percent.
The poll results were based on a sample of 308 New Brunswickers, conducted from August 15-20, 2021.
