As we head into the fall season, Premier Blaine Higgs said the number of hospitalizations will be a key indicator in the fight against COVID-19.
Higgs said he’s satisfied that the number of patients in hospital with the virus remains low and that vaccination rates are continuing to climb.
Higgs said he doesn’t see any immediate changes to New Brunswick’s current response to the virus.
“If we see a change in the type of virus that is present, we will go the next step. We will look at passports and we’ll look at additional mandatory vaccinations.”
Higgs didn’t commit to a vaccine passport for New Brunswick but noted how people will want to travel between provinces and Quebec and Ontario already have them.
“I actually see this as unfolding in a way that there will be a national vaccination passport type of system and then we’ll likely all be part of that.”
The premier commented on Friday in Fredericton after the Public Health Agency of Canada released new COVID-19 modelling data showing cases reaching unprecedented highs this fall if vaccination rates don’t increase and restrictions continue to be lifted.
