The winner of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation’s medical research competition will be unveiled Friday night.
Three teams of medical professionals at the hospital are vying for the $500,000 top prize in the Lions’ Den competition.
Five “Lions” — the men and women in business who served as investors and judges — will determine which team’s idea will get the money.
The first project focuses on new equipment to improve the speed and accuracy of drug detection, the second on a 3D artificial intelligence lab, and the third on enhanced lung cancer care.
When COVID-19 restrictions kept the Dragons’ Den-inspired competition from taking place in person, the hospital foundation partnered with Hemmings House Pictures to let the show go on.
This year’s competition will take place in the form of a film, which will focus on the behind-the-scenes journey of three teams of medical professionals as they compete to win the competition.
On top of the $500,000 top prize, the winner will also take home a $100,000 research grant from the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation.
The runner-up team that audiences vote as most deserving will take home $75,000 for their project.
The Lions’ Den will premiere at 7 p.m. Friday on the hospital foundation’s website.
