The Saint John Sea Dogs have been selected to host the 2022 Memorial Cup championship.
Officials with the Canadian Hockey League named the winning bidder Wednesday morning.
“One team will hoist the Memorial Cup here, and we’re not done until it’s our team that hoists that Memorial Cup here,” said Trevor Georgie, president, and general manager of the Sea Dogs, during an announcement Wednesday.
During the announcement, Saint John Mayor Donna Reardon gave out a “yahoo!”
“It’s going to be the greatest event, we are not going to let the Memorial Cup down at all, we’re going to put on a show like they’ve never seen anywhere else,” added Reardon.
Two teams submitted bids for the hosting rights: the Sea Dogs and the Québec Remparts.
While the Sea Dogs have participated in the national championship three times and hoisted the Cup once, this will be their first time hosting the event.
The Remparts twice hosted the tournament, totaling seven Cup appearances while capturing the Memorial Cup twice.
The 10-day tournament is estimated to generate $10-million in economic impact.
“This event is incredibly exciting because sports are a significant driving force in post COVID-19 recovery,” said Tammy Scott-Wallace, New Brunswick’s minister of Tourism, Heritage, and Culture.
The event, which includes the playoff champion from each of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League, will begin June 3, 2022.
