September 19 to 25 is Child Passenger Safety Week in Atlantic Canada. The week highlights the importance of safely transporting children, as motor vehicle collisions are a leading cause of death and serious injury for children in Canada.
For this year, Child Safety Link has launched a new video called ‘Is Your Child in the Right Seat,’ and has been translated and adapted in nine languages.
“Including English, French, Mi’kmaq, Arabic, Nepalese, Mandarin Chinese, Somali, Swahili, and Tigrinya,” said Katherine Hutka, health promotion specialist for Child Safety Link.
The video walks families through each stage of car and booster seats, from the first ride home with a new baby to determining when a child can safely transition to an adult seat belt.
“As well, making sure that your child is in the right car seat, booster seat, or seat belt for their age, height, weight, and development, and just a few key tips on how to use those seats,” said Hutka.
Hutka added when used correctly, car seats and booster seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by up to 71 per cent.
Child Safety Link has shared the video on YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.
Additional resources were also developed, including multilingual posters and a How-to guide to support community partners in providing child passenger safety information to families.

Together, we can support families to choose the right seat to keep their children safe when riding in the car. #TheRightSeat #CPSWeek2021https://t.co/FVVAqG4nsZ
