A proposed three-storey mixed-use commercial and supported housing building in Waterloo Village is one step closer to reality.
Saint John Common Council gave its first approvals to a rezoning application for 110-128 Waterloo Street on Monday night.
Jennifer Kirchner, manager of community planning at the city, said the building is set to have 12 supported housing units for women on the third floor.
“Which will feature a private washroom and partial kitchen, and a variety of common spaces will also be available to the residents.”
The first floor of the building will feature commercial and retail uses, and the second floor will be home to office space for a variety of not-for-profit organizations.
The developer of the project is the Saint John Community Loan Fund, and founder/general manager Seth Asimakos said the project is continuing the work “we’re trying to accomplish in the Waterloo Village if not Saint John, which is to build assets in neighbourhoods, and there’s a huge need for housing.”
The design of the building is still under review, and the rezoning application will come back to council for the third reading at a later date.
