Saint John Energy has partnered with six other municipal utilities to bring 99 level 2 electric vehicle charging stations to Atlantic Canada.
On average, each municipality will get 10 to 20 connections, and six stations will be in Saint John, including TD Station, each having duel connections.
Kevin Colvey, director of corporate development for Saint John Energy, called the project a “trial balloon.”
“We want these publicly available, we want to make them accessible, we want to track the usage, and have the public use them, and through that, we should know where the market is heading.”
If the project is successful, Colvey mentioned the utilities would “seek to put in more charging stations, and we would look to do fast-charging stations as well because it’s only a matter of time, and it’s more covenant.”
With the charging stations in the level 2 range, Colvey said, drivers will not have to wait 12 hours for a full charge.
“No one should have to park there for 12 hours at a time or need to park there for 12 hours at a time.”
Colvey added the project received funding from the federal government, and each duel station costs approximately $20,000.
