The cause of a fire that damaged an east Saint John school is under investigation.
Emergency crews were called to Glen Falls School on Princess Court just before 8 p.m. Saturday.
Mark Arrand, acting platoon chief with the Saint John Fire Department, said the call came in as a fire alarm activation.
“Upon arrival, crews were met with heavy, thick black smoke coming out of multiple doors of the structure,” Arrand said at the scene.
“Crews immediately upgraded to a structure fire, full response, and made a pretty quick attack of the fire.”
As of 9:50 p.m., Arrand said crews were still working to clear the smoke from the building to determine the extent of damage.
No one was inside the school at the time and no injuries have been reported.
Anglophone South School District superintendent Zoё Watson sent an email to school families Saturday evening.
Watson said it is their understanding that the fire occurred outside the school’s gym.
“We currently have District facility staff on site,” Watson wrote.
Watson said more information will be shared on Monday once they have a better understanding of the extent of the damage.
She encouraged parents and guardians to speak with their children about any stress or anxiety they are feeling as a result of the fire.
