Colin Powell, the first Black U.S. secretary of state, has died.
Powell’s family confirmed his passing in a statement posted to Facebook on Monday.
It said the 84-year-old died due to “complications from COVID-19” and that he was fully vaccinated.
“We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American,” said the statement.
Powell, a retired four-star general, served as the 65th U.S. secretary of state from 2001 to 2005 under president George W. Bush.
He was the highest-ranking African American public official in the United States at the time, standing fourth in the presidential line of succession.
