Canada’s annual inflation rate jumped by 4.4 per cent last month, up from 4.1 per cent in August.
Statistics Canada says that is the fastest pace since February 2003.
The agency says higher transportation, shelter and food prices drove the increase.
Gas prices rose nearly 33 per cent compared with September of last year due to lower price levels in 2020 and reduced crude output.
Excluding gasoline, the annual inflation rate would have been 3.5 per cent.
Food prices were up 3.9 per cent year over year, following a 2.7 per cent increase in August, while the homeowners’ replacement cost index rose by 14.4 per cent.
Passenger vehicle prices climbed by 7.2 per cent thanks in part to the global semiconductor chip shortage leading to limited supply.
